Summer Elective Courses for Canadian University Students

The Ahram Canadian University (ACU), Cairo, Egypt, offers 1-2 summer elective courses to pharmacy as well as university students from Canadian Universities.

The summer semester starts June and ends July (6 weeks).
Two tentative time schedules are offered. Option-1 is convenient if all students will register for two courses this summer. Option-2, however, is more convenient if some students will register for only one course and wish to stay in Cairo for 3-4 weeks. In Option-2, the two courses can be offered in parallel if each student registers for only one course.

Fees:

  • Fees can be paid by Egyptian pounds (EP) or Canadian dollars (CD); 500 EG = 100 CD
  • Non-refundable registration Fees = 500 EP
  • Accommodation in a student hostel:
    • 1300  EP/month, single.
    • 1000 EP/month, in a double room.
    • Meals can be arranged, costs will be extra.
  • Transportation: 1000 EP/month to and from ACU + weekend activities.
  • Tourist activities; can be arranged during the study or after the semester, in Cairo or other parts in Egypt. Cost will be extra.

  • Phytotherapy:

[3 CH; for Pharmacy students, tuition fee = 3000 EP]
This course deals with identification, methods of standardization, traditional uses, evidence-based data, mechanisms of action, side effects, contraindications, and herb-drug interactions of the most commonly used herbal products in the market. [Visits to Herbal Pharmaceutical Firms]

  • Industrial Pharmacy:

[ 3 CH; for Pharmacy students, tuition fee = 3000 EP]
This course deals with studying various pharmaceutical unit operations concerned with industrial drug formulations. Each unit involves the theory, principles as well as the practice of the operation. It also will include the study and characterization of the most suitable equipments. [Visits to Industrial pharmaceutical Firms]

  • Parasitology:

[3 CH; for Pharmacy students, tuition fee = 3000 EP]
This course deals with training students about the incidence of common diseases caused by parasites in Egypt and the Afro-Arab region, their pathology, biology, epidemiology and laboratory diagnosis as well as control and treatment.

  • Arabic Language for non-Arabic Speakers:

The Modern Standard Arabic (Consists of three levels, elementary, intermediate, and advanced)
[ 3 CH/level; for all university students, tuition fee/level = 2250 EP].
The elementary Arabic level introduces the fundamentals of Modern Standard Arabic through reading, writing and oral drills within the framework of the essentials of grammar and vocabulary. Other levels enforce the skills and commands of the language.

  • Egyptology: (Introduction to Ancient Egypt)

      [3 CH; for all university students, tuition fee = 2250 EP]
This course gives a brief introduction of the history of ancient Egypt; Egyptian religious beliefs; Egyptian language, scripts and literature; Egyptian architecture; principles of Egyptian Art (sculpture, painting, decoration) as well as aspects of daily life. [Visits to Cairo Museum and  sites around Cairo (Giza, Memphis, Saqqara)]

  • Egyptian Heritage:

[3 CH; for all university students, tuition fee = 2250 EP]
This course gives a brief introduction to heritage and culture (ways of seeing and interpreting), the spectrum of Egyptian heritage (a timeline), the Nile and Sahara-ecology and destiny, agriculture, crafts, trade and economics. Organizing society (Pharos, viziers and farmers). Religion, arts and literature. Dynamics of collapse and recover. (Visits to Heritage institute, Smart Village)

  • Heritage Science and Engineering:

This course gives a brief introduction of stone and fire (the origin of science and technology). Pottery and pyrotechnic revolution. Mining and quarrying. Hydrology and hydrological engineering. Geometry (triangle, circles and helixes). Mathematics (the hidden structure of the world). Stars and planets. Healing and health. Architecture. Natural history.   • Islamic Culture:

      [3 CH; for all university students, tuition fee = 2250 EP]
This course deals with various topics and issues concentrating on the frames, general trends and basic issues of Islamic Civilization. The principal topics will include: the history of Islamic studies, in relation to Orientalism, area studies, and religious studies; problems of anti-Islamic bias and stereotypes; use of textbooks, primary sources, novels, films, and the Internet; teaching the Qur'an; Muslim presence in Europe and America; contemporary reflection on "classical" sources; modern Muslim
thinkers; gender studies; and other related subjects. The course will feature regular visits to historic sites in Cairo and conversations with scholars in related fields of study, followed by detailed discussion of the texts used in the course, plus student presentations.

  • Middle East Politics:

     [ 3 CH; for all university students, tuition fee = 2250 EP]
This course provides students with a general introduction to the political side of security issues of the Middle East. This course aims at developing academic and intellectual skills of students. It also could serve the purpose of elevating the level of knowledge on the political side of security issues of the Middle East. Such issues include: the political reform progress and their potentialities, the Palestinian question and the Arab/Israeli conflict, the Gulf security, the future of Iraq, the Middle East and global energy security, the nuclear issue in the Middle East, the international relations of the Middle East, the regional role of Egypt, Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia and other non-state actors of the Middle East.
